Political Science at UWindsor

Admissions - Graduate Studies

Requirements

The normal basic requirement for admission to the M.A. program is an honours degree or combined honours degree in political science, or an honours degree in a related discipline, such as international relations or public administration, with a B+ (77.0%) or better average in undergraduate political science courses. Applicants must also submit with their application:

  • two academic letters of reference which must come directly from the referees and will be sent each referee by a link as to how to upload the letters of reference to eGas
    **Note** Non-academic letters will not be reviewed and therefore will not be taken into consideration;
  • an up-to-date resume or CV;
  • a research proposal/statement of purpose/letter of intent (limit to one page, single spaced);
  • a writing sample (e.g., a paper written for a course and seminar; please limit to no more than 10 pages if possible);
  • and all post-secondary transcripts (unofficial transcripts can be uploaded to eGas as a PDF, however official transcripts will be required to be sent directly by schools in a sealed envelope, once you are admitted into our program; no other copies will be accepted).

All required documentation listed above must be uploaded to eGas and must be a PDF file.  If you are admitted into our program, all hardcopy documentation can be forwarded by regular mail.

Honours graduates in other fields will be considered on the basis of their academic background and standing. Those who lack a sufficient background in political science or whose undergraduate GPA is below the usual acceptance level may be admitted on a conditional basis. The terms of a conditional offer vary but they can include being asked to take additional undergraduate courses before moving on to graduate classes. Each application is reviewed by at least three faculty members before a recommendation is made. The formal decision on each file is made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies based on the departmental recommendation.
