An event hosted by teacher candidates March 2 at the Education Building welcomed more than 150 local families for learning, connection, and growth for children.

The fifth annual Early Years Carousel was organized by students in professor Sara Shahbazi’s course “Early Years Service-Learning Specialization.” Since September 2023, they have invested their time in observing and volunteering in kindergarten classrooms, immersing themselves in developmentally appropriate activities and approaches. Bridging theory with practice, the candidates translated course content into seven interactive, open-ended, and play-based activities.

Besides planning and presenting the half-day event, the education students also raised more than $2,500 from local businesses and community members for supplies, snacks, and about a dozen prizes for attendees.

“Thanks to their hard work, families attended free of charge, with each child receiving a grab bag, snacks, and make-and-take creations,” says Dr. Shahbazi. “Their unwavering commitment, leadership, and passion for child-centered and play-based learning were instrumental to the success of the Early Years Carousel.”
