Coming off their experience singing with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra for the Brahms German Requiem concerts, the University Singers and Chamber Choir will present their “Musica Sacra e Profana” concert at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, April 6, at 7 p.m.

This performance blends Broadway gems from Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods with sacred choral music by Bach and Brahms, a selection of poetic songs of joy and love from the Renaissance to today — all celebrating the transformative power of song in our lives.

“We are reprising two movements of our Brahms Requiem repertoire and complementing it with songs my students have learned during the last three weeks of rehearsals,” says director Bruce J.G. Kotowich. “These singers’ work ethic is inspirational.”

The concert opens with “Mamachimowin” by Andrew Balfour, a Winnipeg composer of Cree decent. This work is a sonic portrayal of all peoples giving thanks to the Creator in Cree.

Four student assistant conductors: Jamie Brown-Hart, Haiden Couvillon, Éoghan McCullough, and Nora Wood, will each take a turn leading the ensembles. Alde Calongacong will accompany on piano.
