Micro-grant project promising additional helpings

The inaugural Windsor SOUP was such a success, organizers are serving a second helping. The event allows attendees to vote on which local project will receive support funded by their entry fees. The first dinner, March 2, drew about 160 people.

“It was fantastic to see so many passionate people come together to contribute to the betterment of our community,” said Nick Jones, a business student and manager of the project for Enactus Windsor. The student-run organization at the Odette School of Business seeks to use the power of entrepreneurial action to transform the lives of individuals.

Ken Lori received the support of voters at the March 2 dinner for his project, a meeting house for youth in Walkerville or the Glengarry-Marentette neighbourhood. The monies raised through donations was matched by the P. & L. Odette Charitable Foundation, giving Lori a total of $1,848.50 to get his idea off the ground.

“The funds will help pay for the launch of our thrift store, café, recreation activities and performing arts program that incorporates plays written, directed and performed by teens,” Lori said.

The follow-up dinner is 6 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Walkerville Brewery, 525 Argyle Road. A $5 donation at the door buys attendees soup, salad and a vote on which project has the most potential to make a positive impact on the community.

A third dinner is slated for June 29. Details on the project, including applications to present, are available on the Pathway to Potential website.
