State of auto industry study generates national interest

A study of auto investment in Canada has drawn national attention to the Odette School of Business’ Office of Automotive and Vehicle Research. The study, conducted annually by professor emeritus Tony Faria, points to Canada lagging behind emerging markets such as China, Mexico and Brazil.

The report generated a lead article in the business section of the Globe and Mail newspaper Wednesday.

“It's great to get the Office of Automotive and Vehicle Research recognized on the front page of Report On Business,” said Pete Mateja, co-director with Dr. Faria of the OAVR.

The piece notes that while automakers spent $17.6-billion U.S. around the world last year to increase vehicle-making capacity, none that money was invested in Canada.
