Alumna to take reins at Windsor Symphony Orchestra

UWindsor grad Sheila Wisdom (BA 2001, LLD 2004) says she is excited to take on a new role as executive director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

“It’s an exciting time to be a part of the WSO,” says Wisdom, currently the orchestra’s director of development. She will take up the new appointment April 28. “With our talented musicians, our new home and the vision of our new music director Robert Franz, the WSO can contribute in new and different ways to the cultural and economic health of the region.”

She adds she is “especially enthusiastic” about the potential for expanding partnerships with the University of Windsor when the School for Arts and Creative Innovation moves into the former Armouries building to become the symphony’s downtown neighbour.

A former executive director of the United Way/Centraide of Windsor-Essex County, she served on city council from 1989 to 1998 and was a catalyst in establishing the Capitol Theatre, now home to the orchestra.

Stephen Savage, chair of the orchestra’s board of directors, says Wisdom’s strong ties to the community are an asset to her new position.

“Her business, political, and non-profit background make her the ideal person to guide the WSO through its next phase of growth and development,” Savage said. “She is the right person at the right time with the right skill set.

“Going forward, Wisdom will be responsible for expanding the WSO’s reach into the county and community; growing education programs for people of all ages, allowing them to connect with music in more meaningful ways; and expanding the Capitol Theatre’s role as the cultural hub of the Windsor region.”

Founded in 1947, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra is a professional regional orchestra, which enjoys a national reputation for its innovative programming.
